Tantangan yang akan dihadapi Ong Kim Swee kali ini berbeda. Ia akan memegang peranan krusial dalam memajukan sepak bola akar rumput di Negeri Jiran.
Dengan kualifikasi yang dimilikinya, Ong Kim Swee dinilai mampu mengemban tanggung jawab ini. Ia pun harus siap menghadapi berbagai tantangan dalam mengembangkan bibit-bibit muda sepak bola Malaysia.
Peran dan Tanggung Jawab Utama
Menurut legenda Timnas Malaysia, Jamal Nasir, Ong Kim Swee memiliki segudang pengalaman dalam mengelola tim nasional senior dan U-23 Malaysia.
Namun, Jamal menilai bahwa tugas di NFDP akan memberikan tantangan yang berbeda bagi Kim Swee.
Melatih tim U-23 memang mirip dengan tim senior, tetapi kali ini ada perbedaan. Selain dituntut untuk meraih hasil positif, ia juga harus fokus pada pengembangan pemain, ujar Jamal Nasir seperti dikutip dari Berita Harian.
Jamal menambahkan, Kim Swee perlu waktu untuk mengembangkan potensi pemain muda, memahami psikologi mereka, serta mengidentifikasi kekuatan dan kelemahan masing-masing individu.
Ada banyak pekerjaan rumah yang harus diselesaikan. Kim Swee harus mampu membentuk tim junior yang kompetitif. Saya berharap ia dapat melakukannya dengan bekal kualifikasi yang dimilikinya, kata Jamal.
Jabatan Baru
Ong Kim Swee resmi menjabat sebagai Direktur Teknik NFDP mulai 1 Desember 2025, menggantikan Oscar Francisco Gonzalez.
Pria berusia 55 tahun yang juga menjabat sebagai Presiden Asosiasi Pelatih Sepak Bola Malaysia (PJBM) ini, dianggap sebagai kandidat ideal untuk mengisi posisi tersebut berkat reputasi dan pengalamannya di dunia sepak bola Malaysia.
Ia pernah menjadi tokoh sentral di balik kesuksesan skuad Harimau Muda, dan mencapai puncak karier sebagai pelatih kepala Harimau Malaya pada tahun 2016.
FAM berharap Kim Swee dapat berkontribusi signifikan dalam pengembangan sepak bola nasional melalui perencanaan dan implementasi program yang lebih efektif, demi mengembalikan kejayaan sepak bola Malaysia di level akar rumput.
Kiprah di Indonesia
Sebelum kembali ke Malaysia, Ong Kim Swee sempat menangani Persik Kediri di BRI Super League 2025/2026. Bersama Persik, ia memimpin tim dalam 13 pertandingan, dengan catatan tiga kemenangan, empat hasil imbang, dan enam kekalahan.
Persik menjadi klub kedua di Indonesia yang pernah dilatih oleh Ong Kim Swee. Sebelumnya, ia membesut Persis Solo pada musim lalu, dengan catatan tujuh kemenangan, delapan hasil imbang, dan delapan kekalahan dari 23 pertandingan. Ia berhasil membantu Laskar Sambernyawa lolos dari jurang degradasi di akhir musim.
